Everything but the logo is from Michaels Craft Store. It was actually super easy to make.. I didn't go off a pattern just a picture. The body part is cardboard colored felt, the whipped cream part a cream colored silky fabric, the straw is a paper towel roll, and I bought a really thick headband to glue it to, and I printed off the logo and glued it to cardboard to make it stay stiff and then used fabric glue to stick it to the costume:)

It's that time of the year again where girls and boys dress up and go trick or treating!  (and for those old enough...party til the sun comes up!)

So this year I've decided to be the evil purple minion from Despicable Me 2 to pair with my BFFL who's going as the yellow minion.  I've looked around and found some really nice tutorials for the costume and took a little bit from each to make mine own.

Check out what I was inspired by:

After looking through what others have made before me, I was off to make my version of this cute costume.  I found an old high-waist skirt that I didn't wear anymore and cut that up.
I sewed close the 2 sides of the top rectangle and using the scrap pieces I was able to make 2 straps. With a white coloured eye liner pencil (don't judge me! lol) I drew out the M logo for El Macho and painted it with white acrylic paint.
I wasn't worried about the extra white lines, they just rub off over time.  Then going through my button collection I found 2 buttons that were the same size, except one wasn't black.  So I busted out the black acrylic paint and shazam just like that we got 2 black buttons!

I hand sewed the button to the strap and to the rectangular part of the skirt.  Pictures of this will be at the end!!

I really liked the fitted with the goggle look from the North of Heaven costume.  I searched my house for something to make the goggle from and found this takeout container
With an xacto knife I cut out the inner circle.  This was surprisingly really easy and the plastic cut like butter!

Next I painted the outside of the container and the lid with grey acrylic paint. EZPZ
I then measured out a circle to fit the bottom of the container for the eye.  With some paint I painted the purple eyelid and eye.

I had bought some elastic banding for a skirt I was going to make for my convocation but my serging needle broke and that plan flopped.  So, I re-purposed the elastic (mine measured 1 1/2" by 20 1/2").
Finally with I just hot glued the container to the elastic
All I need now is a purple fitted and some black gloves...But all-in-all I was very pleased with how it all came together.  Here is the costume:

I am SO excited to share this new project I recently finished.  I was asked to make a 12"x12" companion cube!  For everyone who doesn't know what a companion cube is, it comes from a popular video game called Portal.

It's a puzzle based game that is super addicting and whose theme song was the most fun to play on rockband!

So the companion cube I made was for a wedding, they will be using it as a card box.  So the requirements for the box that I had to work off were:

  • must be able to open and close; and
  • red colour scheme instead of the usual pink

Off I went drafting the design for the box.  It was very different from the companion cube I made in my portal themed explosion box.

To be honest, it was the first time I've created anything like this on this kind of scale so I learned A LOT.  What did I learn?

  • support pieces are a MUST
  • measure twice, cut once
  • always take into account the thickness of your medium
  • most importantly, PATIENCE
After a week and a half of hard work, I completed the project and am very proud of my work :D
